stone cutter

Hammering away at our souls
Wave after wave of existence
We must take up the chisel
And place it

Wow. That's nice of you to convert this bit of verse into a post. And the photo you paired with it is amazingly spot on. Thanks!

I just now have the time to tell you in more detail, Paisley, that your photo you paired with it added a whole new interpretation on the verse for me!! What a cool thing!…with the addition of the visual, new paths were opened.

My original intent was almost the opposite of how it came out. Perhaps when I wrote it the first time, I made a mistake…in that maybe I should have ordered the verses differently which would have been projected more precisely my original meaning:

Wave after wave of existence
Hammering away at our souls
We must take up the chisel
And place it.

So the identity of the subject who is actually doing the hammering has great effect on it. Is it the author (stone cutter) or the external force (waves of existence) who is doing the hammering? My original thinking was the external force as this was in response to the May 24 post of “When bad things happen to good people.”…what is there to do when external forces hit us(?). But I see now that the more natural interpretation is the internal force is hammering, an interpretation, that was originally hidden to me. That’s very interesting. And I think I like the sentiment your photo brought to it. And perhaps the paradox in it all is a good thing.

i try very hard to pair the words with a photo that is interpretive.. in my mind, it is we who do the hammering, and thus the photo...

i am really glad you like it....

.....a wordy, visual , narrative... as seen thru your eyes and mine.....
